Nine Years, Ten If You Descale, Twelve-Plus for a Bosch

Dishwashers usually last about nine years, ten when well kept; that is the average dishwasher lifespan the studies agree on. The NAHB/Bank of America study and InterNACHI’s chart both list nine years; Consumer Reports says plan on ten. Stainless-tub Bosch and KitchenAid units commonly reach twelve to fifteen on our calls.

  • Entry-level plastic-tub models: 7–10 years
  • Mid-range stainless-tub models: 9–12 years
  • Bosch / KitchenAid class: 12–15 years

What “Lifespan” Means When You Are the One Paying

Nine years is the number every inspector’s chart prints. The uncomfortable part is in Consumer Reports’ member surveys: roughly one dishwasher in five has a problem inside its first five years.

A dishwasher almost never dies all at once. It leaks, stops heating, or leaves water in the bottom, and each of those is one part with one price. Whether the next part is worth buying at its age is what the matrix below answers, at our dishwasher repair prices. Already know the fault? See not draining or not cleaning.

How Long Does Each Price Tier Really Last?

How long should dishwashers last at each price? Price class predicts lifespan better than the logo: it decides the tub material, the pump design and the electronics behind the door.

Price tier / formTypical yearsWhat usually fails first
Entry-level, plastic tub (builder-grade Frigidaire, Amana, base Whirlpool and GE)7–10Door latch and wax motor (the small actuator that pops the detergent cup), then the drain pump. Rack tines often rust by year eight.
Mid-range, stainless tub (Whirlpool, Maytag, GE Profile, Frigidaire Gallery, Samsung, LG)9–12Drain pump, inlet valve, door gasket; boards after year eight on electronics-heavy models.
Upper tier, stainless tub with a manual filter (Bosch, KitchenAid)12–15Wash-motor bearings, door spring cables, a leak float that trips with age.
18-inch compact (condos, ADUs)8–10The small sump floods and trips the leak switch sooner.
Panel-ready / fully integrated12–15Same parts as its brand; the risk is a hidden leak behind cabinetry, costlier in flooring than in parts.

Years we see on our calls; heavy use or very hard water pulls a unit to the low end.

How Long Do Bosch, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Samsung and LG Dishwashers Last?

Dishwasher lifespan by brand matters less than tier, but each maker has a signature failure. Published data is noted where it exists.

BrandTierYearsWhat to watch
BoschUpper tier, filter-basedBosch dishwasher lifespan 12–15 in our calls (Bosch’s own repair-or-replace guide: 8–12)E15 is water in the base pan under the AquaStop float; E24 is a drain fault. See Bosch dishwasher repair.
KitchenAidUpper tier (Whirlpool-built)12–15Fewest problems in J.D. Power’s 2025 reliability study (63 per 100 units). Wash motor ages first.
Whirlpool / Maytag / AmanaMid-range9–12Drain pump, inlet valve, door latch; common, inexpensive parts keep repair sensible past year ten.
GE / GE ProfileMid-range9–12Tied for second with Bosch in the J.D. Power study (64 per 100). Board and latch come later.
FrigidaireEntry to mid-range7–10Heating-element scale, latch, drain pump. Gallery stainless-tub models top the range.
SamsungMid-range, electronics-heavy9–12Leak-sensor trips and control boards after year eight; drain pump before that.
LGMid-range, Direct Drive wash motor9–12Drain pump and inlet valve first; the sealed wash motor is long-lived. Spray-arm jets clog in hard water.

Thermador dishwashers come out of Bosch’s factory and follow the Bosch row.

Why Two Identical Dishwashers Die Five Years Apart

Same model, same year, five years between their last cycles. The difference, starting with the water:

Water at 16 grains per gallon

The City of San Diego reports tap water averaging about 16 grains per gallon (276 ppm), ranging 16 to 18. That scale coats the heating element, plugs the inlet-valve screen and spray-arm jets.

Detergent, rinse aid and the filter

An empty rinse-aid dispenser leaves film you blame on the machine; too much detergent etches glass for good. An unrinsed filter makes the circulation pump run hot.

How many loads a week

A dishwasher run twice a day takes its ten-year wear in six. Gasket, latch and pump bearings count cycles, not birthdays.

The disposal and the air gap

California Plumbing Code 807.3 requires an air-gap fitting on a domestic dishwasher drain. A clogged air gap or a disposer knockout plug left in place backs water into the sump and kills healthy pumps.

Eight Things You Will Notice First

Each line names the part behind it and whether that part is worth buying at year nine.

  1. Rust on the rack tines or the tub seam. Racks can be replaced; a rusting tub cannot.
  2. Water standing in the bottom after every cycle, not just once: the pump or the check valve (the flap that stops drained water flowing back).
  3. Dishes come out cold and wet. The heating element or its thermostat is gone.
  4. The door drops open or will not latch. Spring cables and latches wear out together.
  5. A puddle at the front corner or a dark patch on the floor. On a Bosch, an E15 that returns after the base pan dries is a real leak.
  6. The same error code after a power reset. Once is a hiccup; a code that returns is a failing part.
  7. Grinding or a loud hum during the wash. Pump debris is cheap; a worn wash-motor bearing at year ten is not.
  8. A second major repair within twelve months. After pump and board, the next failure is the tub, motor or door.

Your Tier, Your Age, Our Call

Left column: your tier. Top row: how old it is. The cell is our answer, with the one parts-and-labor price that tips it.

Your tierAt 5 yearsAt 9 yearsAt 12 years
Entry-level, plastic tub
7–10 years
Repair. A door latch and wax motor at $180–$260 buys the second half of its life.Depends on the sticker. A door gasket at $180–$260: yes. A main control board at $220–$420 on a plastic tub: no.Replace. It has outlived its range; anything beyond a latch is money toward the new machine.
Mid-range, stainless tub
9–12 years
Repair, every time: heating element with thermostat $180–$300, inlet valve and screen $180–$260.Repair one part: a drain pump at $190–$340. Pump and board in the same year is a replacement quote.Depends on the tub. No rust and one fault: fix it. Two faults, or a seam weeping: replace.
Bosch / KitchenAid class
12–15 years
Repair; it is a third of the way through its life. A Bosch E15 / AquaStop base-pan fault runs $220–$380.Repair. A spray arm and wash motor at $180–$280 still has years to earn back.Usually still repair a single part; wash-motor bearings or a rusted tub seam are the two faults that end it.

Full price list: dishwasher repair. The same logic for every appliance: repair or replace.

Registered, insured, local

Spark’s registration with the California Bureau of Household Goods and Services is #C 62399; we are insured, and every dishwasher call rolls out of Spring Valley.

One technician, the whole machine

The same person who tests the pump checks the tub seam, door springs and heater, so the verdict covers the next failure too.

How You Stretch a Dishwasher Past Ten Years

Five things our technicians do to their own machines at home:

1

Keep the rinse-aid dispenser full

In hard water rinse aid is not optional: it makes water sheet off instead of drying into spots, and stops you doubling the detergent.

2

Run a descaling cycle monthly

An empty hot cycle with citric acid or a dishwasher cleaner clears scale from the element and sump; Samsung’s own support guidance says hard-water homes must clean the machine more often.

3

Rinse the filter, scrape the plates

On Bosch, KitchenAid and most newer mid-range units, twist out the cylinder filter and rinse it monthly. Scrape plates, do not pre-rinse.

4

Check the air gap and drain hose yearly

Unscrew the chrome air-gap cap on the sink deck and clear it; confirm the drain hose has a high loop and no kink.

5

Treat the first leak as urgent

A gasket replaced the week it starts weeping is a small repair. Left for a season it is a swollen toe-kick and a floor claim.

What People Ask Before Replacing a Dishwasher

  • How long do dishwashers last, according to the published studies?

About nine to ten years. The NAHB home-component study and the InterNACHI chart both list nine, Consumer Reports says plan on ten; home inspectors call that the typical life expectancy of a dishwasher.

  • How long do dishwashers last by brand, in your experience?

On our calls Bosch and KitchenAid run twelve to fifteen years; Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Samsung and LG nine to twelve; entry-level Frigidaire and Amana seven to ten.

  • How long do dishwashers last in San Diego with our hard water?

Toward the low end of each range unless you descale. Municipal water here is hard; the scale builds on the heating element, inlet-valve screen and spray-arm jets. A monthly citric-acid cycle and a full rinse-aid dispenser recover most of those years.

  • How often should you replace your dishwasher?

Not on a schedule. A latch at year nine is a repair; a control board at year nine on a plastic tub is not; a rusting tub ends it at any age.

  • What usually fails on a dishwasher?

Three faults account for most of our dishwasher calls: a drain pump that stops moving water, a door latch or its wax motor, and an inlet valve. Heating elements, gaskets and control boards make up most of the rest; wash motors and tubs go last and end a machine’s life.

  • Is it worth fixing a 5-year-old dishwasher?

Almost always. At five years you are under half the expected lifespan, and the typical faults at that age, a drain pump or a heating element, cost a fraction of a new machine. The exception is a cracked plastic tub.

  • At what age does repairing a dishwasher stop making sense?

Two lines decide it: the age against its tier’s range, and the quote against half the price of an equivalent new unit. Under both, repair. Over either, replace, unless a panel-ready install means cabinetry work.

  • What does it cost to have an aging dishwasher looked at?

The service call is $90 and covers the trip and the diagnosis. Approve the repair and it comes off the bill; if the machine is not worth fixing, that is the only charge. Parts and labor carry a 90-day warranty.
