Fuel splits a dryer repair cost before anything else: electric dryers heat with a coil, gas dryers with an igniter and a valve. Belts, rollers, motors and boards price the same on both. Repairs run from $140 to $480; find your fuel, then your part.

How much does it cost to repair a dryer? Parts and labor run $140 to $480 (the low end is a Samsung tS sensor), and most repairs land between $160 and $380. The $90 visit is subtracted once you approve. Gas adds only $10 to $20, and only on the heat row.
Quick · switch, belt, vent
$160–$280
Door switch, drum belt or a full exhaust-path cleaning. No heat parts involved, so gas and electric price alike.
Heat & drum · element, igniter, rollers
$180–$380
Electric: coil plus thermal fuse. Gas: igniter, valve coils or flame sensor. Worn drum rollers land here too.
Major · motor, board
$260–$480
The drive motor turns the drum and the blower; the board runs everything. Boards are usually ordered to the model.
Six of the eight rows on our dryer repair price table ignore fuel entirely. A belt is a belt. The split is the heat source: an open coil and a blown thermal fuse on an electric dryer, versus an igniter, gas valve coils or a flame sensor on a gas one. A flame sensor is the switch that confirms the burner lit.
Read the row, not a national figure: the fuel tag beside each row is the only thing that changes between your dryer and your neighbor’s. Washer pricing lives on the washing machine repair cost page; other appliances are in the all-appliance cost guide.

Two rows carry a fuel tag; the other six are the same on any dryer.
| Repair (fuel) | Parts + labor |
|---|---|
| Door switch / latch · both fuels. The drum will not start with the door shut. | $160–$260 |
| Drum belt · both fuels. Motor hums, drum stays still. | $160–$280 |
| Vent cleaning, lint trap to the outside hood · both fuels. Long dry times, hot cabinet. | $160–$280 |
| Electric only · heating coil plus its thermal fuse. Drum turns, air stays cold. | $180–$340 |
| Gas only · igniter, valve coils or the flame sensor. No flame, or a flame that dies. | $190–$360 |
| Drum roller / bearing rebuild · both fuels. Thumping or squealing as it turns. | $200–$380 |
| Motor · both fuels. Hum with no spin, or a dead start. | $260–$480 |
| Main control board · both fuels. Dead panel, random stops. | $280–$480 |
Dryer heating element repair cost (the replacement cost, really) already includes the thermal fuse, the one-time safety cutoff that often fails alongside it. Dryer vent repair cost beyond cleaning, such as a crushed duct, is quoted on site.
Three things push a dryer quote toward the top of its row.
An electric coil is one part on two terminals. A gas burner has an igniter, two or three valve coils and a flame sensor, each tested before one is named. That is why the gas row starts $10 higher.
A freestanding dryer slides out and opens in minutes. One wedged into a closet, or the top half of a stacked pair, takes longer to free, and that time sits at the high end of the row.
A thermal fuse usually opens because the exhaust is choked. Fit a new one without clearing the vent and it blows again, so a long or crushed run brings the cleaning row onto the quote.
What changes by brand is which heat part a code points to.
| Brand | Electric model | Gas model |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung | HE (a heating fault) is quoted on the element and fuse row, $180–$340. The tS temperature-sensor code runs $140–$240. | HE leads to the igniter row; tS stays on its sensor row. Walkthrough: Samsung dryer not heating. |
| LG | Element and fuse row, once any D80, D90 or D95 vent warning is cleared. | D80, D90 and D95 are Flow Sense vent warnings on both fuels, not a broken part. No flame leads to the igniter row. More: LG appliance repair. |
| Whirlpool / Maytag / Amana | Maytag dryer heating element replacement cost sits on the element row, with the fuse included. | No flame usually traces to the igniter or the valve coils, both on the gas row. |
| GE | Element row; newer electronic models can reach the board row. | Igniter jobs from the front panel. The gas connector is checked before reassembly. |
| Electrolux / Frigidaire | Element and fuse row; boards are ordered to the model tag. | Igniter and coils on the gas row; drum parts match the electric model. |
Where the visit fee sits, from the moment the technician rings to the moment you decide.
Consumer Reports members paid a median $733 for a standard electric dryer and $787 for gas (2015–2025 survey). Half of those is the 50% line: about $366 and $393. InterNACHI puts a dryer’s expected life near 13 years. Four quotes from the table above, worked both ways:
| The job and the age | Electric dryer · $733 new | Gas dryer · $787 new |
|---|---|---|
| Heat source at 4 years: element $260, or igniter $280. | 35% of new. Repair. | 36% of new. Repair. |
| Drum rollers at 7 years, $300 on either fuel. | 41%. Repair if the belt and motor are quiet. | 38%. Repair. |
| Motor at 11 years, $440. | 60%. Replace. | 56%. Replace, near the end of its life. |
| Board plus belt at 12 years, $560. | 76%. Replace. | 71%. Replace. A gas swap adds a gas connection. |
A stacked pair is replaced as two machines, which keeps repair ahead longer. Every appliance: the repair-or-replace guide.
Three habits on every gas or electric call:
Electric and natural-gas dryers are routine work for us. The technician checks the gas shut-off and the connector before opening a gas cabinet. Spark is BHGS-registered (#C 62399) and insured.
A blown fuse on a choked vent fails again within weeks, so the exhaust is checked before a heat part is quoted. Whatever we fit carries 90 days, part and labor.
A laundry center or a stacked pair often comes out of its frame before a panel opens. The quote says so, by model, before you approve.
Answer these on the call and dispatch can usually name the row.
A gas dryer has a gas line and a 120-volt plug; an electric one has a large 240-volt plug. The model tag, inside the door frame or on the back panel, names the exact heat part.
Ten feet straight out a wall is a different job from thirty feet through the attic. It changes both the vent row and the odds of a blown fuse.
Cold air with a turning drum, a code, a thump, or nothing at all. Each one points at a different row.
Smell gas? Leave the house, skip the light switches and call SDG&E from outside. Otherwise unplug the dryer and run no more loads.
Long roof vents in coastal condos and garage dryers inland meet the vent row more often than kitchen-side laundries. Searching “dryer repair cost near me”? These are the figures Spark Appliance Repair quotes from its Spring Valley base across San Diego County.
A call placed before noon usually means a same-day technician at the dryer; ring (619) 330-5105 or book online. Coin-operated and shared-laundry dryers are commercial work, quoted separately with a $120 service call.

Electric or gas, only the heat line changes. Book the visit; if you smell gas, call SDG&E first.
Most electric dryers land on the element row, $180 to $340; gas dryers on the igniter row, $190 to $360. Everything that is not heat is the same on both fuels, $160 to $480, and a Samsung tS sensor job starts at $140.
Only on the heat part. An electric element with its thermal fuse runs $180 to $340; a gas igniter, valve coil or flame sensor runs $190 to $360. Every other row is identical for both fuels.
On an electric dryer, $180 to $340 with the thermal fuse included, parts and labor together. Gas dryers have no element; their heat repair is the igniter row.
At median prices the 50% line sits near $366 for electric and $393 for gas, so most quotes below that are worth paying. A dryer past ten years that needs a motor or a board is usually better replaced.
The drive motor at $260 to $480 and the main control board at $280 to $480. Two parts on one quote, such as a board and a belt, cost more than either alone.
No heat is a frequent one, and its cause depends on the fuel. On electric models it traces to the element or thermal fuse, on gas models to the igniter or valve coils, and on both to a choked vent.
A Samsung HE heating fault is quoted at $180 to $340 and a tS temperature-sensor fault at $140 to $240. Samsung advises cleaning the lint screen and vent first.
At the door. It comes back as a credit line on the written quote, so a $300 roller job leaves $210 to pay.
Yes. A blocked exhaust overheats the dryer and opens the thermal fuse, so a new fuse alone fails again. A full exhaust-path cleaning is a $160 to $280 row of its own.
