Studies answer “how long do refrigerators last” with 13 years standard and 9 compact; the real figure depends on type, brand tier and where the box sits. The tables pair those numbers with what Spark’s technicians see on San Diego County calls; the $90 visit is credited to any repair.

The average lifespan of a refrigerator is about 13 years for a standard unit and 9 for a compact (NAHB, 2007); InterNACHI’s inspector chart says 9 to 13. The one published built-in figure is about 20. A hot garage, salt air or a dirty condenser can take years off any of them.
Two sources anchor the typical lifespan of a refrigerator. The National Association of Home Builders’ 2007 Study of Life Expectancy of Home Components lists a standard refrigerator at 13 years and a compact at 9. InterNACHI’s inspector chart publishes 9 to 13, assuming regular maintenance.
Real households stretch those figures: in 2020 the U.S. Energy Information Administration counted 14.3 million of 122.9 million primary refrigerators at 15 years or older and almost one in four second refrigerators past that mark. ENERGY STAR puts such a unit about 30 percent above a new certified model in electricity.

Two figures come from a published study: 13 years standard, 9 compact. The rest is the spread Spark’s technicians see, explained by part count.
| Type | Years technicians see | Why it differs | Fails first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top-freezer | 13–17 years | One evaporator, one fan, no dispenser. | Defrost heater; gasket; start relay. |
| Bottom-freezer | 12–15 years | Same simple loop plus a freezer drawer. | Drawer gasket; evaporator fan. |
| Side-by-side | 10–13 years | Door dispenser, ice maker in the freezer door. | Ice maker and dispenser; door water line. |
| French-door | 10–13 years | Most features per cubic foot; often two ice makers. | Ice maker; inverter board. |
| Built-in / integrated | 15–20 years | Serviceable compressor bay; the one published built-in figure is about 20. | Condenser fan; late-life sealed-system leaks. |
| Compact / garage second fridge | 9 years (NAHB); less in a hot garage | Small compressor in a room that swings from 45°F to 100°F. | Compressor and start relay; door seal. |
No mass-market maker publishes a lifespan figure; the hard numbers are the warranty terms each brand puts on its own compressor and sealed system.
| Brand (tier) | Compressor / sealed-system coverage | What technicians see |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana (mass-market) | Year one parts and labor; years two to five on the sealed system (many models). | Whirlpool refrigerators last 10 to 13 years in the field; the top-freezers run longest. |
| GE (mass-market) | One year on most models; five-year sealed-system cover on some Profile lines. | GE refrigerators last about as long as Whirlpool units; side-by-side dispensers are the early calls. |
| Frigidaire (value) | One year standard; sealed-system terms vary by model. | Frigidaire refrigerators last 10 to 13 years with a clean condenser; defrost heaters and relays are the usual repairs. |
| Samsung (feature-heavy) | Digital inverter compressor: 10 years parts, 5 years labor; sealed system 5 years. | Samsung refrigerators last as long as any mass-market box; the early calls are electronics, not the cooling loop. |
| LG (feature-heavy) | Inverter Linear Compressor: 10-year parts-only warranty. | LG refrigerators last as long as the linear compressor; one that clears year ten usually goes on to 13. |
| Bosch, KitchenAid (upper mass-market) | KitchenAid: sealed system to year ten, parts only; Bosch: model-specific. | Bosch and KitchenAid refrigerators last at the top of the 10–13 band: heavier door hardware, quieter compressors. |
| Sub-Zero (built-in) | The maker states a design life of about 20 years. | A serviceable top compressor bay is why the figure is reached. |
Which refrigerators last the longest? A top-freezer by layout, a built-in by class; brand matters less than the ice maker.
The national studies assume a room-temperature kitchen and clean coils. Four local conditions break that.
Most refrigerators are rated to 110°F; a closed garage in El Cajon or Santee passes that on an August afternoon, so the compressor barely stops.
In Point Loma, Coronado and Imperial Beach the condenser fins breathe salt air; they corrode, heat exchange drops, the compressor runs hotter.
City of San Diego water averages about 16 grains per gallon, 16 to 18 across the system. Scale closes the inlet-valve screen and coats the ice mold.
A condenser coated in dog hair cannot shed heat; a cut-out with no air gap traps what it sheds; a flattened gasket lets humid air in.
None of these alone condemns a refrigerator; two or three together past year ten usually do.
The age line: under seven years almost everything is worth fixing; seven to twelve, the quote decides; past fifteen, only cheap parts. Each price is the live row on Spark’s refrigerator repair page; other appliances: the appliance repair cost guide.
| Age | Typical failure · parts + labor | Spark’s call |
|---|---|---|
| 0–3 years | Ice maker module or inlet valve; inverter board — ice maker $220–$400 · board $280–$520. | Repair; this young, the compressor terms (5 to 10 years at Samsung and LG) may still cover the part. |
| 4–6 years | Evaporator or condenser fan; door gasket; defrost heater — fan $220–$420 · defrost $200–$380 · gasket $160–$300. | Repair; each is a one-visit part on a system with years left. |
| 7–10 years | Start relay; defrost system; control board; first compressors on garage units — relay $180–$340 · compressor $450–$850. | Repair below about half the price of a comparable new unit: a compressor is already past that line on a $750 top-freezer and borderline on a $1,600 French-door. |
| 11–15 years | Compressor; refrigerant leak; repeat defrost repairs; liner and hinge wear — leak repair + recharge $500–$900. | Repair only if the cabinet is sound and the quote stays well under half of a new unit; built-ins usually qualify. |
| 15+ years | Anything in the sealed system; discontinued boards — relay, gasket or thermostat only. | Replace unless the fix is one of those three; the energy saving of a new unit now counts. |
The ledger behind every row: $90 at the door, $90 back off the quote; an owner who replaces pays the visit. The 50 percent rule itself is on the repair-or-replace guide.
A repair company earns either way, so the age table below is allowed to say “replace”.
The technician decodes the manufacture date from the serial plate before quoting. Compressor swaps, leak repairs and recharge are EPA 608 certified sealed-system jobs done in-house, so a compressor verdict arrives priced.
The age table uses the live refrigerator repair rows; one sheet prices a Whirlpool top-freezer and an LG French-door, so the brand changes the part, not the rate.
Spark is on file with the California Bureau of Household Goods and Services as #C 62399 and insured. The technician comes from the Spring Valley HQ; the repair is warranted 90 days, part and labor.
Each targets one failure cause above; together they are the difference between 9 years and 13.
Pull the kick plate or roll the unit out and vacuum the coils and fan; clean coils are the cheapest compressor insurance.
A refrigerator pushed against a wall or boxed into a tight cabinet re-breathes its own heat.
Close a dollar bill in the door; if it slides out with no drag, the seal is done.
Six months is the usual interval; in hard water, dump the first ice of the season too.
A kitchen refrigerator is not built for a 100°F garage; a garage-rated unit or an interior wall is the fix.
A lifespan verdict is only as good as the diagnosis under it. Spark’s technicians dispatch from Spring Valley, read the serial-plate date, test the compressor, fans, defrost circuit and board, and quote against the age line above. EPA 608 certified sealed-system work is done in-house.

Our dishwasher was on life support and these guys brought it back to new. See photos. They cleaned both tubs and replaced the pump. Works like new. Remember to use the dishwasher cleaner they recommend.
The serial plate, the symptom and a two-hour arrival window are all it takes: one visit returns the age, the quote and an honest repair-or-replace answer.
Shorter than in a kitchen. Most refrigerators are rated for 45 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit; an uninsulated East County garage passes that on a summer afternoon, so expect less than 13 years unless the unit is garage-rated.
Sub-Zero refrigerators last about 20 years by the maker’s own statement, the one published figure. Among Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Samsung and LG the layout matters more than the badge: a top-freezer tends to outlast a French-door from the same maker.
Worth fixing when the quote is a fan motor, start relay, defrost part, gasket or thermostat. A compressor or refrigerant quote at ten years is the borderline, decided against the price of a comparable new model.
Yes on a built-in, on an LG or Samsung still inside the 10-year compressor parts coverage, or on most units under about eight years. No on a 12-year-old mass-market French-door with other worn parts. The job runs $450 to $850 installed.
A compressor that never cycles off, a back panel hot rather than warm, frost returning in a frost-free freezer, clicking at start-up and a rising electricity bill. Any one is a repair call; the age table above says whether that repair pays.
When the repair quote passes about half the cost of a comparable new unit, when the cabinet or liner is cracked, or when the part is discontinued. Past 15 years, sealed-system work is also a replacement call.
The cooling system ages the same, but service comes sooner: ice makers and dispensers are the most frequent complaint in Consumer Reports surveys, and San Diego hard water scales the inlet valve. Budget for one ice-maker repair, $220 to $400.
Done properly, with the filter-drier replaced and the charge weighed in, a compressor job resets the cooling system to roughly day one. The rest keeps its age, so it pays on a 7-year-old box, rarely on a 15-year-old one.
