Three Ways a “Compressor” Call Ends

A refrigerator compressor cost question has three possible answers once the meter is on it. Only the middle one is a new compressor; the other two are cheaper, or a different sealed-system job altogether. The $90 visit that finds out is credited to whichever repair you approve.

It was never the compressor

$180–$340

Start relay and overload. The compressor clicks, hums and quits; a new relay and it runs. Usually one visit.

Compressor replacement

$450–$850

Mass-market unit. Old compressor out, new one brazed in, system recharged.

Leak, then recharge

$500–$900

The compressor is healthy but the system is low. The leak is found and sealed before any refrigerant goes back in.

What a Compressor Quote Is Made Of

The cost to replace a refrigerator compressor is mostly work, not metal. Recovering the old refrigerant, cutting and brazing the lines, a new filter-drier, a deep vacuum and a charge weighed to the nameplate take most of the hours. The figures here are the rows on our refrigerator repair page.

So the real question is rarely “how much is a refrigerator compressor” but what the box around it is worth. A new top-freezer runs about $700, a French-door about $1,600, a built-in $2,900 and up. Set that against the job. Every other fault, symptom by symptom: refrigerator repair cost.

Compressor and Sealed-System Prices (Parts + Labor)

What the meter finds, left; the installed price, right.

What the meter findsParts + labor
Start relay + overload — the refrigerator compressor relay clicks, the compressor hums and stops.$180–$340
Condenser or evaporator fan — the compressor runs hot or the cold never reaches the fresh-food side.$220–$420
Main board / inverter PCB (the circuit board that drives an inverter compressor) — compressor not running, no command.$280–$520
Compressor, mass-market — open or shorted winding, locked rotor, no pumping.$450–$850
Sealed-system leak + recharge — healthy compressor, low charge, frost pattern broken.$500–$900

Where the Money Goes Inside $450–$850

Four lines make up the job; each one moves the figure up or down the row.

The compressor itself

A standard mass-market compressor sits at the low end; an inverter or linear unit pushes the figure up.

Cutting and brazing

The old compressor is cut out and the new one brazed into the lines. It is the slowest hour of the job.

Recovery, vacuum and charge

Old refrigerant is recovered, not vented; the system is pulled into a deep vacuum, then charged by weight. This is the line a parts-only warranty does not cover.

Access to the bay

A freestanding unit rolls out in minutes; a built-in or a fridge boxed in by cabinets adds time.

Warranty Paths by Brand

Before any quote, read the warranty card. On some brands the compressor is free for years and you pay only for the work around it.

One Compressor Job, Line by Line

One fixed charge opens every compressor call. Here is how it reads on a single receipt.

  1. Visit at the door: $90 residential service call.
  2. Compressor job quoted at $650: $650 total; the visit is credited, so $560 is left.
  3. Same job on an LG in years two to seven: the compressor, drier and refrigerant lines read $0; the labor line remains.
  4. Replace instead: $90 is the whole receipt.

The Ledger: Compressor Job vs New Refrigerator

Is it worth replacing a compressor on a refrigerator? Set the job against the box. Among Consumer Reports’ 2026 picks, about $700 buys a top-freezer and about $1,600 a French-door; built-ins begin at $2,900 installed, per Synchrony. Delivery and install add $100 to $400 to the first two. Six real situations:

Three Things We Do Before Saying “Compressor”

A compressor verdict costs you hundreds, so it has to survive three checks:

Gauges On Before the Verdict

A running compressor that does not pump shows on the gauges, not on a meter alone.

The Sealed System Stays In-House

EPA 608 certified sealed-system work is done in-house: recovery, brazing, vacuum and charge, at your refrigerator, by the company that quoted it, BHGS-registered (#C 62399) and insured.

A New Filter-Drier Every Time

The part that traps moisture is replaced on every opened system, so the new compressor does not start life on wet refrigerant. The finished job carries 90 days on part and labor.

Four Tests Before Anyone Condemns a Compressor

This is how to tell if a refrigerator compressor is bad without guessing, and why a call can end with “it was the relay.”

1

The relay and overload

Pulled and checked first. A failed relay alone explains the click-hum-click every few minutes.

2

The windings

Resistance across the compressor terminals and from each terminal to the shell. An open or grounded winding is a verdict; a normal reading sends us back to the relay or board.

3

Amp draw under start

A locked compressor pulls high current and trips; a weak one runs but does not pump. Gauges confirm which.

4

Condenser, fans and the board

A packed condenser or a dead fan makes a healthy compressor overheat and shut off. On inverter models the board must send the run command.

Relay, Compressor or New Fridge?

One visit puts a number in each column of the ledger: what the job costs, what a new box costs you, and which one we would pick in your kitchen.

Compressor Cost Questions

  • What is a typical refrigerator compressor replacement cost on a mass-market model?

On mass-market refrigerators the job runs $450 to $850 installed, with everything around the compressor in that figure. Built-ins are quoted by model.

  • Is it worth fixing a 7-year-old fridge when the compressor fails?

On a 7-year-old $1,600 French-door, yes: the box has years left and the part may still be covered. On a 7-year-old $700 top-freezer the job is most of a new one, so replace unless the warranty pays for the part.

  • Will LG pay the refrigerator compressor replacement cost under warranty?

Partly. On LG’s US card the Inverter Linear Compressor part is covered for 10 years and sealed-system parts, refrigerant and drier included, for 7. Labor is covered in year one only, then billed. LG publishes no average lifespan for the compressor; the 10-year part term is the span it backs. Check your own card.

  • How much is a compressor for a refrigerator if I buy the part myself?

We do not quote the part alone, because a compressor cannot be fitted without recovery equipment, brazing and an EPA 608 certification. Installed, the figure is $450 to $850 on mass-market models.

  • What signs point to a bad compressor rather than a failed relay?

Signs include a click that keeps repeating with no steady hum, a compressor that is hot while the fridge is warm, or no sound at all while the light works. Only a relay check, winding test and amp reading confirm it.

  • How do you reset a refrigerator compressor at home?

Unplug the refrigerator for a few minutes, then plug it back in and set the thermostat to the middle. The overload resets itself as it cools. If the click returns within minutes, the relay or compressor needs testing.

  • What is the Samsung refrigerator compressor replacement cost after the warranty?

Samsung covers the digital inverter compressor part for 10 years and sealed-system labor for 5. From year six you pay the work share; after year ten, the full $450 to $850 row.

  • Is a compressor swap cheaper on a top-freezer?

The row is the same, $450 to $850; what differs is the box around it. On a $700 top-freezer that row is most of a new fridge, on a $1,600 French-door between a quarter and a half.

  • Why is my refrigerator compressor not running?

Usually a failed start relay, a control board that sends no run command, or an overload tripping on a dirty condenser. A dead compressor is possible too, but it is the last one we test.
